About this episode

Ty, TJ, and Kylie tackle a simple question with a firm answer: yes, cryptocurrency companies should have a blog, and the reason is SEO. A blog stacked with relevant content signals authority to Google and improves the odds of ranking for searches tied to your business. Because crypto is still a young industry, keywords that will be heavily searched in the future are still winnable today, which makes early, consistent blogging a compounding advantage rather than a one-off task.

The conversation moves into practical mechanics: how blogging for SEO differs from growing a social account, why keyword research (using tools like Ahrefs, SEMrush, or free Google Keywords) matters more than posting volume, and how search intent keeps traffic relevant instead of just high in volume. TJ walks through a real example, exchanges targeting phrases like "how to buy Bitcoin," and the group discusses ideal posting cadence (weekly or biweekly), post length (around 1,300 words), and platform choices, comparing WordPress, HubSpot, Drupal, and Medium.

They close with a plug for Coinbound's free SEO audit tool and a reminder that once a blog has enough pillar content, it can be repurposed into video, a topic they say deserves its own episode.

Key takeaways

  • Start a blog now while crypto keywords are still relatively easy to rank for compared to more mature industries.
  • Do keyword research before writing; use Ahrefs, SEMrush, or free tools like Google Keywords to find terms with real search volume and low competition.
  • Post with intent, not frequency: once a week or every two weeks is enough if each post targets a specific keyword.
  • Match content to search intent so the traffic you attract actually fits your product, rather than chasing easy but irrelevant keywords.
  • Aim for roughly 1,300 words per post as an optimal length for SEO performance.
  • Host content on your own site using a CMS like WordPress, HubSpot, or Drupal; if using Medium, publish on your own site first so it gets priority in search.
  • Treat a strong blog as pillar content that can later be repurposed into video and other formats.

Questions this episode answers

Do cryptocurrency companies actually need a blog?

Yes. Ty argues the main benefit is SEO: a blog with relevant, keyword-targeted content signals authority to Google and increases the odds of ranking for searches related to your business. TJ adds that it also builds a digital presence and a base of research you can repurpose into other content later.

Why is now a good time for crypto companies to start blogging for SEO?

Crypto is still relatively young, so keywords that will be highly trafficked in the future are still easier to rank for today. Ty and TJ note that SEO gains compound over time: early rankings attract backlinks, which further secure your position, something that gets much harder to achieve later once competition increases.

How often should a crypto company post blog content?

According to Ty, you do not need to post constantly. Once a week or once every two weeks is fine if the content is done thoughtfully and targeted at the right keywords, with posts around 1,300 words considered optimal.

What keyword research tools should crypto marketers use for blogging?

The hosts mention Ahrefs and SEMrush as paid tools, and Google Keywords as a free option, to check how often a term is searched and how difficult it is to rank for. Coinbound also offers a free automation audit tool at coinbound.io/analysis-tool that shows keywords a brand should be targeting.

What is search intent and why does it matter for crypto blog content?

Search intent means matching your content to what your target audience is actually looking for, not just chasing easy, high-volume keywords. Ty gives the example that ranking for a shoe-related keyword would bring traffic to a crypto site, but that traffic would not convert since it has nothing to do with your product.

Which platform should I use to host a crypto company blog: WordPress, Medium, or something else?

The hosts recommend a CMS like WordPress, HubSpot, or Drupal so traffic lands on your own site. Medium is fine as a secondary channel if you are time-pressed, but you should post on your own site first since Medium's algorithm is built to avoid cannibalizing your original post and will prioritize your site in search results.

Ty Smith0:05

Welcome to another episode of the Crypto Marketing Show. My name is Ty Daniel Smith. With me is TJ and Kylie, and today we are discussing should cryptocurrency companies have a blog? I will start and make it real simple. Yes. Yes, they should. There is a lot of benefits of having a blog, but the main one that stands out to me is SEO purposes, search engine optimization, getting yourself ranked high on Google. Google ranks sites based on authority, and having a lot of relevant content to whatever it is your business does demonstrates to Google that it's related to that and makes it more likely to serve your website when someone searches a relevant keyword. For crypto companies specifically, I would say now is the time to get in for SEO. Yes, crypto has been around for a long time, but it's still relatively young, and it's still easier than it will be to get on the top of the search engine results page for keywords that in the future will be highly trafficked.

TJ1:00

Yeah, extremely difficult.

Ty Smith1:01

Yeah, so we spent a lot of time finding words that I think, I do a lot of the SEO, that I think in the future will be highly trafficked and right now aren't, so they're easy to rank high for. So we're doing really well on that, actually.

TJ1:11

And that's a that's a great point to make. Like we always we always seem to like on every subject say when you're creating something, you always want to know why you're doing it and have the end in mind and the purpose. So it's absolutely critical to have a blog, but as he was just mentioning, you want to do it very intentionally. Don't just randomly write whatever comes to your mind and call it a blog. We're talking about specifically keyword-optimized blog posts.

Ty Smith1:34

Yeah, so growing a social media channel and growing a blog for SEO purposes is very different because on social media, in general, the more content you post, the faster you grow, just get more eyes on your account. With blog content, if you're just putting up whatever you think you want to put up and you're not doing any keyword research behind it, you're really wasting your time, especially on a blog that requires hours to write a post sometimes. So, yeah, you definitely have to do it thoughtfully.

TJ1:56

Right. And so, like you were saying, for crypto companies and brands right now, if you there's tools out there that you can use to select those keywords and kind of plan strategically about what type of blog post is the right type of blog post, what type of words you need to be working in there, what areas you need to be kind of attacking because really the what you're doing with this blog, especially if you're a brand, is you're trying to start creating your digital presence online, which starts through Google, like he was mentioning. Most traffic all comes through Google.

Ty Smith2:22

And Bing, also. I mean, they all, we're talking about search engines in general.

TJ2:24

Sure. And Google is just the one that gets named just because they're the big, dominant force.

Kylie2:29

I was going to say, is Bing still around?

Ty Smith2:30

Yeah, Bing is still around. Bing is still a thing as long as Microsoft is.

TJ2:34

Bing is still a thing. That should be their marketing. There you go. Bing is a thing. Bing is still a thing.

Ty Smith2:37

We think.

Kylie2:37

Yeah. That's actually that's trademarked, so you can't use that, Bing. Sorry. We'll bill you later.

Ty Smith2:42

Yeah, so going back to the point of why crypto companies should get in now is that a lot of SEO stuff is kind of exponential. So when people are writing an article on something related to something that you might have a blog post on, they will be a little lazy, they'll type in whatever, and if you're the first result on there, it's very easy for them to just copy that URL, link to it on their page, and then that really, when you have a bunch of sites linking to that one page, it really secures your spot, basically, in the top results because now not only is now you have all these people saying, 'Yeah, this is relevant content to what this keyword is.' So, yeah, that's another reason why crypto companies should get in now.

Ty Smith3:14

How to do it. So there's definitely a lot of ways to do it, and there's a lot of like schools of thought on it. But like we said, don't post all the time just for the sake of posting. Post with a reason. So we use tools like Ahrefs and SEMrush, and there's actually free ones like Google Keywords, that let you see how commonly searched keywords are, how difficult they are to rank for. So do things based off of that. And in general, it's relatively inexpensive to hire writers.

TJ3:46

And let me give you an example of that just so people understand. So say you're a top exchange, some of the things some of the keywords you'd be going for, you'd be looking for like people when they search 'how to buy Bitcoin'. Obviously, you'd be trying to rank highly on the Google search page. Now, that's going to be a very, very hard one to do, especially at this point. But a couple of years ago, it wasn't nearly as difficult. There was only a few exchanges, there was only a few wallets, etc., etc. So thinking about what people are going to be searching when they would find a product like yours is usually kind of the approach you want to take.

Ty Smith4:13

It's called search intent. You can find a keyword that is really easy to rank for and gets a lot of searches, but if you're a cryptocurrency company and it's something related to shoes, why even waste your time? Just to get traffic on the site? It's not going to convert at all.

TJ4:44

Right. So if you're, for us, things that relate to crypto marketing or social media marketing, things like that, obviously make sense. If you're a wallet or a brand, it's just going to be that entry-level 'how to buy Bitcoin', 'how to get Bitcoin', 'where do you get Bitcoin', those type of things are the type of keywords and phrases you would target.

Ty Smith5:02

Yeah, exactly. So we do a lot of influencer marketing in crypto. So we have targeted crypto Twitter, Bitcoin Twitter, crypto Instagram, crypto TikTok, even.

TJ5:12

Yeah, I was going to try to stray away from giving everybody the specific targets that we go after, but...

Ty Smith5:12

Well, we go after so many. Yeah, so frequency, you don't have to post super, super frequently. Once per week, once every two weeks is fine if you're doing it the right way. Keep your content around 1,300 words is what they say is optimum. Tools, tips and tools, let's discuss that.

TJ5:43

Tips, I think one thing to keep in mind is that it builds, it's a cumulative effect. So it's a lot of work and it's time-consuming, but you just keep putting it together when you have time and you do it effectively and efficiently, and you'll start to see the results exponentially over time. So a year in, you're going to have a lot more results, even from articles that you posted originally are going to start to be getting more organic traffic that's driving stuff back to your page, and it gives you also a baseline of researched information of things that relate about your company that you could then pass off to somebody else to then repurpose into other type of content and things like that.

Ty Smith6:34

Yeah, so the easiest way to host a blog, if we're talking platforms, is a CMS, content management system. So there's WordPress, HubSpot lets you do it, there's something called Drupal, which I've never used, but I've heard it works.

TJ7:22

Yeah, Drupal is great.

Ty Smith7:24

Oh, you've used it? Okay. I've been WordPress since day one. So, yeah, those are really easy to set up a blog quickly and create content quickly. You can go the route of posting on Medium, but I don't recommend that usually unless you're really time-pressed because you're not getting the traffic onto your site, you're getting it onto Medium.

TJ7:32

Yeah, if you're doing it on Medium, you need to be posting both. You need to post it on your site as well as then copy and paste to Medium. Now, one thing that is cool about Medium is that it is designed for writers, and their algorithm is specifically created to not cannibalize your own blog post. So if you post it on your website first, it knows that this is a duplicate, so it will prioritize your website before Medium as the organic search, which is kind of cool, where a lot of the other places won't do that. Like we said, use tools like Ahrefs and SEMrush because otherwise you're really just wasting your time, honestly. They're expensive up front, but consider the cost of Google Ads. If you're going to pay a couple hundred dollars per month on that, why not just on like that's not recurring. That's one time you're paying for impressions and clicks.

TJ8:15

Well, and really, we have a tool, a free automation tool, an audit tool for anybody who needs, who's curious about their own website and you want to get an audit, we can run a quick report and show you most of the keywords you should be targeting and kind of help you decide and kind of key in your blog a little bit.

Ty Smith8:44

Yeah, it's coinbound.io/analysis-tool, I believe.

Kylie8:49

It's on basically every page. Was this our first ad?

Ty Smith8:50

It might be our first ad. Hashtag sponsored. Sponsored by ourselves.

Ty Smith8:54

Which brings us to our next point. If you don't have time to deal with managing a blog, it definitely is time-consuming, work with an agency that knows how to do it.

TJ9:01

Right. Or, yeah, writers and, yeah.

Ty Smith9:05

Yeah, you can't be good at everything. What is that? What is Kylie pointing to our sign?

Kylie9:13

That does work.

TJ9:13

Hey, we're really good at this if you want help. Call us.

Ty Smith9:13

Yeah. All right. Anything else, guys, to add?

TJ9:15

Well, yeah, the last point was if you've done all the time and energy into making a blog, the next step beyond that would be converting it into video content, which we could probably talk about on another episode.

Ty Smith9:28

Yeah, it definitely serves as good pillar content, which can be clipped up.

TJ9:28

Yeah, research, basically.

Ty Smith9:28

Okay. All right. That is all for today. Please remember to rate, review, and recommend if you found this podcast valuable, and follow us on social media. We're on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, everywhere.
